Using Mindfulness to Combat Anxiety
May 26, 2023Mindfulness is a powerful practice that helps us be present in the moment, enabling us to fully embrace our internal and external experiences without judgment or attachment. This practice allows us to separate our mind from our brain, giving us control over the anxiety and fear that can otherwise take over our lives.
So, what is mindfulness? It's about being fully present and aware of everything going on inside of us, without grabbing, joining, engaging, or problem-solving. This practice helps us be above the irrational thoughts that our brain produces, observing them without becoming a victim to them. Mindfulness is a practice of awareness, acceptance, and detachment, allowing us to observe our thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them.
Mindfulness can be especially helpful in managing anxiety states, panic, and scared feelings, which are often produced by our brain's fight or flight response. By accepting and observing these feelings, we can break free from the cycle of fear and panic. Instead of fighting or resisting these feelings, mindfulness teaches us to let them be, allowing them to naturally move out of our system.
One way to practice mindfulness is through breathing exercises. As we focus on our breath, we let go of our thoughts and become present in the moment. This simple practice can have a profound impact on our mental health, helping us to manage anxiety and stress.
For example, my daughter Lucy developed anxiety after a traumatic experience on an airplane. I taught her a simple formula to help her manage her anxiety: feel it, ignore it, and move on. This practice allowed her to be present with her fear, without letting it control her actions. As a result, she was able to overcome her anxiety and enjoy life again.
Mindfulness is not just a one-time practice; it's a lifelong journey that helps us train our mind and brain to have a healthier relationship. By regularly practicing mindfulness, we can change the way our brain reacts to stress and anxiety, making us more resilient and emotionally intelligent.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help us manage anxiety, stress, and other negative emotions. By being present and non-judgmental, we can observe our thoughts and feelings without becoming attached or overwhelmed by them. This practice enables us to live a more balanced and fulfilling life, giving us the ability to face challenges with courage and resilience.
