What Does Mentally Healthy Faith Look Like?
Aug 04, 2023In a world filled with distorted religion and dysfunctional church experiences, what should true, mentally healthy Christian faith really look like? This is an important question to ask ourselves.
A mentally healthy faith stems from a connection to God that provides attachment, meaning, and empowerment to live well. This type of faith is grounded in dependence on God, not independence. It involves surrendering control to God instead of grasping for it ourselves.
Mentally healthy faith also flows out of vital relationships within the body of Christ. We were never meant to walk alone, but to grow together, using our unique gifts to serve and strengthen each other. Healthy attachment to both God and others is crucial.
Additionally, mentally healthy faith requires structure and freedom. Through renewed minds and godly self-control, we build healthy boundaries and purpose. We take responsibility for ourselves, rather than judging others. And we find freedom from both sin and legalism as we walk by the spirit in grace.
This type of faith embraces the full range of human emotions, allowing us to bring grief, pain and disappointment to God, receiving comfort through his Spirit. It also enables us to cultivate character qualities like perseverance and self-control.
Healthy faith is grounded in spiritual disciplines like prayer, study, and service. It helps us understand our purpose and live it out for God’s glory. And it is willing to sacrifice and suffer hardship at times to develop Christlike maturity.
Mentally healthy Christian faith manifests itself through dependent attachment, gracious relationships, responsible freedom, comfort in grief, emotional maturity, and spiritual depth. It is faith rooted in God's grace and truth.
Questions for Reflection:
1. Do I exhibit dependent attachment to God or independent self-reliance?
2. How am I cultivating spiritually healthy relationships?
3. Does my faith promote genuine freedom or legalism?
4. In what areas do I need more faith-fueled emotional growth?
